Falling Back
The big Grammy buzz this year is the reunion of The Police. And I am as excited as the next guy; maybe even a little more. In case you didn’t catch my last post mentioning The Police, read all about it here.
And CBS/the Grammys seems pretty happy about it too. Both their websites are touting the reunion and the local affiliates are running the video promo spots non-stop.
Which is their right.
But here’s the thing – the video spot keep referring to The Police as a supergroup. They are not a supergroup.
A supergroup is a group made up of musicians that are/were part of a famous group before joining the new group. For example:
Cream
w/ Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, and Ginger Baker
Blind Faith
w/Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, Steve Winwood, Ric Grech
w/…well, duh.
They put the super in supergroup.
Before The Police, who the hell were Gordon Sumner, Andy Summers, and Stewart Copeland? And after The Police, what did Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland do? I mean, other than session work and a few movie sound tracks…
Finally, this will probably lead to a reunion tour where you’ll need to take out a second mortgage to buy a pair of nosebleed seats.
But I won’t be going. Instead I’ll put on the box set, turn down the lights, close my eyes and remember the '83-'84 Synchronicity Tour.
