Yes, But Without Water, Soap, or a Towel
The reason I ask? Because today’s post is about said shower, but I’m not sure how to start it. The original starting sentence read – “P.Pie’s baby shower was this past weekend…yada, yada, yada."
It’s the subject (P.Pie) and the direct object (baby shower) that give me pause.
Shouldn’t it be – “The twins’ baby shower was this past weekend…”? After all, the shower is for the twins, officially. It’s baby products that you receive at the aforementioned shower.
Of course, you could make the argument that the baby belongs to the mother (as much as any human being can belong to another). And if that is the case, the original sentence is correct.
But in truth, the child is mine too. Then the second sentence is the correct one.
Obviously this leads to a third sentence possibility – “Our baby shower was this past weekend…” The subject is ‘our’ and the direct object is ‘baby shower’. In theory it’s correct, but in practice it’s wrong.
The sentence is incorrect because you’d never catch me having a male/female baby shower.
Now, if you’re a guy and you had that kind of a shower, I’m sure you had a good reason – you love your wife so much you couldn’t say ‘no’ to her, or the couch isn’t particularly comfortable, or you really want to live to actually see your child/children.
I’ve digressed from the topic at hand; the shower was great (at least that’s what P.Pie said) and we got a ton of stuff we needed. Including, but not limited to, diapers.
The VP had a ‘diaper contest’ – those who brought P.Pie a bag of diapers got entered into the contest. Pretty simple, but very effective.
I really appreciate everyone who came, but I want to give a special shout out to two who put on the event – P.Pie’s sister, The VP and our friend, Ginny. Special props go to my former boss turned friend, JeniWink, who allowed us the use of her restaurant at no charge.
Muchas gracias to everyone.
